A$375 · Offered by Douglas Stewart Fine Books

Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 63 x 101 mm, verso with imprint of E.B. Cardell, Photographist, S. Australia and contemporary pencilled inscription Angaston Council , the albumen print in excellent condition with good tonal range, some slight fading to the right hand edge, the mount clean. The photographer of this wonderful group portrait, E.B. Cardell, was active in Kapunda, near Angaston in the Barossa Valley, during the year 1866. This is the only year he is recorded as working in South Australia, and by the early 1870s he appears in Queensland (Davies Stanbury, Mechanical Eye ). An inscription on the back of another copy of this carte de visite identifies the members of the Council (presumably from left to right) as: William Green (Gawler Park), N. Player (Moorooroo), J.Jepson (Angaston), E.W. Roberts, G.Schilling, J.G. Klemm.
