[Cover title : The White Australia Question.]. Melbourne : E. W. Cole Book Arcade, c. 1903. Fourth Edition. Octavo, lettered red cloth (lightly marked), previous owner s name roughly erased on front pastedown, four parts titled 1. A White Australia Impossible. 2. The Cause of Color in Mankind. 3. The Whole Human Race is Mixing. 4. The Negro , with the original wrappers bound in, pp. 32; 32; 32; 48, illustrated with ethnographic portraits, a fine copy. The White Australia Policy was a series of legislative measures aimed at referencing immigration to Australia from white races between 1901 1973. In this early and significant series of tracts, Melbourne bookshop owner and social reformer E. W. Cole argues that the policy is both impractical, immoral, and against Christian values. We regret being unable to find room for further extracts from Mr. Cole s pamphlet, which forcibly shows the utter riciluusness of a White Australia in the tropical parts thereof Fitzroy Observer.
