Tracy Chevalier (b. 1962) grew up in Washington D.C., studied English at Oberlin College, moved to England, worked for several years as a reference book editor, and took her MA in creative writing at the University of East Anglia before publishing her first novel in 1997. Girl with a Pearl Earring , her second, was published in 1999, won the Barnes Noble Discover Award, and has since sold over five million copies in thirty-nine languages.
