A New American Atlas, Designed Principally to Illustrate the Geography of the United States of North America; First folio edition of one of the most handsome and important American atlases of the early 19th century. The maps range from continental maps of the Americas to detailed regional maps of the expanding United States, including the western states and territories at an early stage of development.Finley was active as a Philadelphia map publisher from the late 1810s to the mid-1830s. This atlas followed his New General Atlas of 1824. This is the first issue, with maps dated 1824-6; the second issue has maps dated 1826-7. A smaller pocket edition was also published the same year. No priority is usually cited, but the Philadelphia Inquirer advertised this folio edition as "This day is published" on 31 January 1826, and the pocket edition the same on 1 March 1826. No further folio edition was published under Finley's name, and the plates passed to Samuel Augustus Mitchell, who revised them for his own New American Atlas in 1831.
