The Purple Land that England Lost. First edition, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Mrs C. M. Ellis with the author's best regards".Although a commercial failure on its initial publication in 1885, the novel was successfully revised in 1904 as The Purple Land, Being One Richard Lamb's Adventures in the Banda Oriental, in South America, as told by Himself, and went on to have its own literary life. It is referenced by Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises, and Jorge Luis Borges devoted a chapter to it in Other Inquisitions, where he compared it to the Odyssey and described it as "perhaps unexcelled by any work of Gaucho literature".
