Gray Jr., the Chair of the English Department at Randolph-Macon College, Virginia, who had a large circle of literary friendships.In the 1960s, Gray joined Paul and Jane Bowles on a road trip through Madrid, Lisbon, Marrakesh, and finally Tangier, where the couple had lived since 1947.Bowles's collection of nine travel essays explores remote places in Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.
