Seed. A Novel of Birth Control. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Frank E. Rodolph, with friendship and with affection, Charles G. Norris, 6 August 1930". This copy is accompanied by a printed programme for the "World Premier Presentation" of the film adaptation, which opened on 17 April 1931 at the Fox Cathay Circle Theatre, starring a young Bette Davis in her second film. Written at the beginning of the birth control movement in the US, the drama follows a couple in New York as they navigate beginning and maintaining a family. It explicitly presents arguments both in favour and against birth control, influenced by ideas of eugenics and religion. The film was produced three years before the introduction of the Hay's Code, which prohibited the depiction of sexual topics.Frank E. Rodolph (d. 1948) was an actor who performed in Norris's play The Rout of the Philistines: A Forest Play (1922) and was vice-president of the Bohemian Club.
