Programme for a 1954 performance at the Royal Albert Hall: An evocative memento from Holiday's memorable first London appearance, in which she performed to a full house of 6,000. "The Incomparable Billie Holiday", ran New Musical Express's headline: "She went to leave the stage three times, but of course, they would not let her go" (cited in Vail, p. 159). Holiday was backed by the British duo of Kenny Napper (bass) and Allan Ganley (drums), as well as her long-time accompanist Carl Drinkard. The rear cover advertises a post-concert appearance at Coventry Street's Flamingo Club, the home to Kenny Graham's Afro-Cubists.In 1954, Holiday fulfilled a lifelong wish to tour Europe, performing in Spain, West Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, and finally England.
