Theosophy from a German Point of View. First and only edition, from the library of the American physician Elmira Y. Howard (1841-1921), her signature dated 1888 on the title page. The secretary of the Cincinnati Theosophical Society, Howard was popularly known as the first woman to open a medical practice in the Midwest. An associate of Helena Blavatsky, Arthur Gebhard (1855-1944) co-published the Theosophical periodical The Path (1886-1896) in collaboration with Mohini M. Chatterjee and William Quan Judge. He was also one of the first in the movement to recognize the occult significance of Richard Wagner's operas. The eponymous "German point of view" is that of the philosopher Carl du Prel (1839-1899), whose work on South Asian mysticism is here collected and offered in a loose translation, "supplemented in places with a further exposition of esoteric teaching" (p. 7).WorldCat records only four institutional holdings, all of which are in the US: Brown University, the University of Alabama, Hamilton College, and the Boston Athenaeum Library.
