Japanese Poetry: The 'Uta'. First edition, second issue. It bears the ownership inscription of A. Neville Whymant, dated 1920, who was one of the early scholars of Asian studies in the UK alongside Waley. He taught Chinese and Japanese at the School of Oriental Studies, co-edited the Oriental Literary Times, and did pioneering work on Mongolian grammar.The majority of poems translated in this collection are from the Manyoshu, the oldest poetry collection in Japan. There are also many selections from imperial anthologies, such as the Kokin wakashu, Gosen wakashu, Shui wakashu, and Senzai wakashu.The first issue was released in grey paper wrappers in October 1919.
