Huma Viagem de Duas Mil Legoas ("A Journey of Two Thousand Leagues"). First edition in book form. Barbuda, then secretary general of Portuguese India, travelled from Lisbon to Goa via Gibraltar, Marseilles, Malta, Alexandria, Aden, and Bombay. In this work, published in modern-day Panaji, he comments on the landmarks, geography, and literature he encountered, including an in-depth description of the European-style buildings of Bombay. In the UK, it is held only in the British Library.Cláudio Lagrange Monteiro de Barbuda (1803-1845) was born in Setúbal to a civil servant but orphaned at the age of eight. In 1821, he enlisted in the 7th Infantry Regiment and went on to fight in Madeira and Vila Franca de Xira. During the Liberal Wars he served in the engineering corps and in 1839 was made secretary general of Portuguese India.Barbuda's account was first serialized in Revista Universal Lisbonense from 11 July 1844 to 13 February 1845. This edition was edited by Felippe Nery Xavier (1801-1875), an administrator and historian of Indian descent who was the director of the Imprensa Nacional. He was also a fellow of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and a senior member of the secretariat of Joaquim Heliodoro da Cunha Rivara. Xavier expanded Barbuda's work by including his obituary (first published in Revista Universal Lisbonense on 27 March 1845), an illustration of his tombstone, a dictionary of places mentioned along his route, and a catalogue of geographic, demographic, and economic
