Belaja gvardija (The White Guard). Michael Glenny's copy, with his signature on the front free endpaper. Glenny's translation, the first in English, was published the same year. This is the second impression of the Bradda Books edition.The White Guard was originally serialised in the Russian journal Rossiya in 1925, although the journal ceased publication before the story was complete. A censored version of the novel, missing the dream sequences, appeared in the Soviet Union in 1966 in the journal Moskva, and it was this version that Glenny used as the basis for his translation. It was not published in Russia in its complete form until 1989, whilst the first complete edition in English was published in 2008 with a translation by Marian Schwartz.Bulgakov adapted the novel as a play in 1925, titled The Days of the Turbins. First staged in 1926, it became a huge success until it was banned in 1929. In 1932, possibly through Stalin's intervention, the play was reopened and ran until 1941.
