The White Guard (The Days of the Turbins). First play edition in English, signed by the translator on the half-title. This edition was published to coincide with the Royal Shakespeare Company's staging of the play in 1979.The White Guard was originally serialised as a novel in the Russian journal Rossiya in 1925, although the journal ceased publication before the story was complete. Bulgakov adapted the novel as a play in 1925, titled The Days of the Turbins. First staged in 1926, it became a huge success until it was banned in 1929. In 1932, possibly through Stalin's intervention, the play was reopened and ran until 1941. The first English staging of the play took place in 1937 at the Ambassador's Theatre in London.
