Between the Woods and the Water. First edition, signed by the author on the title page, with his printed name struck through. Following A Time of Gifts (1977), this is the second book in Fermor's celebrated travel trilogy that recounts his walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. Between the Woods and the Water details Fermor's journey from Czechoslovakia, across the Great Hungarian Plain, through Budapest and Romania, to the Iron Gates of the Danube bordering Yugoslavia. The author's diary of the Danubian leg of his journey, which forms the basis of this book, had been left behind at a friend's residence in Romania, and was not to be returned to him until many years later. The final book in the trilogy, The Broken Road, was published posthumously in 2013, pieced together by Artemis Cooper and Colin Thubron using diaries Fermor kept at the time and an early unpublished draft.
