Poems and Ballads. A finely bound collection of all three series. The first volume of Poems and Ballads (1866), a "dazzling collection" (ODNB), provoked one of the most notorious controversies in English poetry, and made Swinburne's name. Its a heady mix of sadomasochism, necrophilia, egalitarianism, and blasphemy shocked many Victorian readers.
