The Bread and Salt Between Us
$25 · Offered by Kitchen Arts & Letters
Anjari and her family settled in New Jersey after fleeing Syria. Since then she has been cooking fund-raising dinners at the Rutgers church that sponsored them. These dinners introduce traditional Syrian food to the local community and allow other displaced families to taste some of the familiar flavors of home. In this handsome book, Anjari offers recipes divided into three sections: everyday fare, holiday food, and sweets. Co-writer Jennifer Sit provides cultural context for the various dishes, noting how the Syrian versions may differ from those in other Middle Eastern countries. We’re also pleased to see that recipe names are rendered in Arabic script as well. Color photographs throughout. Hardcover.
