1848. Broadside document, 9 7/8 x 15 3/4 inches, a pay request for himself, a white servant, and his horse for the month of December, 1848. Smith, a native of Kentucky, was an 1843 graduate of West Point; he was brevetted three time in the Mexican War, served as an instructor at West Point, and worked on fortifications around the country, resigning his commission in 1854 to work as a civil engineer.
