A satirical piece written at the expense of a thinly disguised Connecticut militia officer, portrayed here as a dandy and a dilettante, thinking he might be called to Florida to replace an unsuccessful Jessup and rise to high office when he's unable to make his way through a local society ball. The subtitle is taken from an Aesop fable, Ass in the Lion's Skin i.e., fine clothes
