The Challenger departed Rio for the Pacific at the beginning of April 1835. En route, she had intented to stop at Conception (300 miles south of Valparaiso) for wood and water. They rounded Cape Horn, which was predictably stormy, in early May. After a brief respite, poor weather resumed and the ship was wrecked on the 19th. This increasingly uncommon work narrates the wreck as well as the officer’s and crew seven weeks ashore. Sabin 19961; Huntress, 135.
