Translator William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878) was a famous American poet and journalist; he produced this translation late in his life. It is written in blank verse (unrhymed iambic pentameter), aiming for a dignified, poetic, and accessible style that captures the spirit of the original without strict literalism. Bryant sought to make the epic readable and enjoyable for English-speaking audiences while preserving its grandeur and moral depth. ABOUT THIS SET: Early reprint.
