Translator William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878) was a famous American poet and journalist; he produced this translation late in his life. It is written in blank verse (unrhymed iambic pentameter), aiming for a dignified, poetic, and accessible style that captures the spirit of the original without strict literalism. Bryant sought to make the epic readable and enjoyable for English-speaking audiences while preserving its grandeur and moral depth. ABOUT THIS SET: Early reprint. Attractively bound in matching hunter green cloth with gilt lettering and ornamentation on the cover and spine. Gilt top edges. Milk chocolate brown endpapers. Volume I is x, 272 pp.; Volume II is vi, 256 pp. On a shelf, this set spans 2.25 inches. CONDITION: Minor external shelfware and rubbing. Hinges are strong and binding is sound.
