The Tramp: His Meaning and Being. First edition of Gray's photographically illustrated history of vagrancy in Britain, informed by his experiences working in disguise to uncover the conditions of workhouses. Gray (1880-1935), MP for Oxford from 1922 to 1924, campaigned on behalf of farm workers and in 1919 sought employment as a coal miner to expose the conditions of the pit. "After the repeal of the poor law in 1929, he established Frank Gray House in the former Bicester workhouse to help reclaim young vagrants" (ODNB).
