Housman's poetry was the focus of Darrow's 1929 lecture to the University of Chicago on pessimism and optimism. Their acquaintance commenced in 1927, the year of this essay compilation's publication.Darrow (1857-1938) was a lawyer and politician who was known for his work on behalf of trade unions and had a "reputation as a friend of organized labor" (ANB). Platt (1860-1925) was a professor of classics at University College London. These essays cover topics such as the comedies of Aristophanes and the relationship between poetry and science.
