The manual is designed for easy consultation by police officers and provides instruction in Alfonse Bertillon's method of using physical measurements to record identities. It also gives guidance on taking portraits, now known as "mug shots". From the Crime Library of Patricia Cornwell.Reiss (1876-1929) received his PhD in chemistry from the University of Lausanne and in 1899 became the head of the university's photography laboratory. In 1903, he published La Photographie judiciaire (Forensic Photography), and in 1909 he founded the Institut de Police Scientifique (Institute of Forensic Science), which he directed until 1919.
