The Hungry Eye. First edition, signed by the author on the front free endpaper and with his label on the title page. It examines works by artists ranging from Einar Jonsson to Gerardo Dottori and is "the personal story of [Piper's] adventurous quest around the world for Cosmic Art" (p. 19).Piper was a professor of philosophy at Syracuse University who wrote extensively on art, aesthetics and philosophy. He was "a noted authority on comparative religions", particularly the Bahá'í Faith and Jainism (Whitmore, p. 203). His associates included Ithell Colquhoun, with whom he corresponded on visionary art, and the artists Earl and Achsah Brewster; he intended to include the Brewsters' work in The Hungry Eye but was unable to acquire photographs in time for its publication (Marks, p. 77).
