The Traditional Construction of Early Twentieth Century Houses in Bahrain. First edition of this well-illustrated work on traditional houses in Bahrain, based on the author's fieldwork. It was borne out of increasing efforts towards the study and preservation of Gulf historical architecture during the intensive urban development of the 1980s, and the adaptation of traditional structures to modern urban development. This study of human geography examines the relationship between domestic architecture and living customs and habits in early 20th-century Bahrain, as most historic houses dated from that time. It describes traditional building techniques, designs, decoration, and materials; potential downsides related to them, such as dampness, mould, and deterioration; and the organization of domestic space. The analysis was based on three case studies of specific buildings.The purpose was not only to celebrate an overlooked part of Bahraini history and society, but also to suggest new methods of restoration and preservation, based on the scientific evaluation of the causes of deterioration.
