The Philosophical Dictionary for the Pocket. Written in French by A Society of Men of Letters, And Translated into English from The last Geneva Edition; corrected by the Authors. First edition in English of Voltaire's incisive exposition of his intellectual project, his largest and yet also his most accessible philosophical work, structured as a collection of 73 short essays. The Dictionary "consists largely of attacks on religious dogma; at the same time it shows the author's abhorrence of falsehood, obscurity, and oppression, and is written with simplicity and lucidity coupled with lively malice and sarcasm. It was at once ordered to be burnt at Geneva, and was subsequently (1765) condemned by the parlement and by Rome" (Harvey & Heseltine, p. 209).The work was first published in 1764 in Paris. ESTC identifies two editions printed in London in 1765: the other, which appears to be a paginary reprint of this edition, was done for Thomas Brown. No priority has been established.
