First edition, a privately circulated sample book of papers from Abbey Mill, pleasantly presented as a "non-book" dedicated to "those who enjoy the sight and feel of good books but to their sorrow have little time for reading them".The author's family firm, Grosvenor, Chater and Company, had acquired Abbey Mill in 1854. It was "one of the few remaining small and independent paper mills in the British Isles" until it closed its doors in 1982. Aside from introductory prelims, An Essay on Silence contains no printed text, offering the reader a chance to admire "some exceptionally pleasant papers".
