Sixth edition (same year as first) of this popular exposé of the failings of prison discipline. This copy includes a loosely inserted letter by the author's great-great granddaughter Violet Elizabeth Buxton (1897-1984), stating, "I am glad you like T.F.B.'s book on Prisons; by all means keep the copy, as we have another".The influential work led to the formation of the Society for the Reformation of Prison Discipline, of which Buxton was a committee member. It was also "praised by Sir James Mackintosh in the House of Commons, and was translated into French and widely circulated in Europe. Its reception in India indirectly led to an inquiry into the scandalous management of Madras gaols" (ODNB).
