Typed letter signed, following his appointment as Commodore of the Royal Western Yacht Club. Churchill writes shortly after his appointment to thank the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe for his good wishes and invitation to stay with him. The letter is attractively framed beside reproductions of a portrait photograph of Churchill and a wartime poster using words from his "We shall never surrender" speech.Churchill became Commodore of the Club in September 1949 and remained in the role until his death. The club was one of the oldest in England; the office was chiefly honorific.Churchill writes to Kenelm William Edward Edgcumbe, 6th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, whose father had also served as Commodore. Edgcumbe had written on 24 September to congratulate him and invite Churchill and Clementine to stay if they came to Plymouth (Churchill Archives, CHUR 2/326). Churchill replies, "It is most kind of you to suggest I should stay with you, should I ever come to visit the Club, and Mrs. Churchill also. Unfortunately I cannot see any prospects of our being able to do so in the near future".
