Schönheit im Olympischen Kampf. First edition of the photobook produced to accompany Olympia, Riefenstahl's documentary of the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Both inevitably included images of Jesse Owens, whose performance was an electrifying refutation of Nazi theories of athletic superiority.Olympia was immediately recognized as truly innovative, experimenting with cutting-edge shooting and editing techniques, winning the Best Foreign Film in Venice following its premiere in 1938. The majority of the images in this work are stills from the film, but the concluding section adds 31 behind-the-scenes production photos. Riefenstahl's relationship to the Nazis and her complicity in the regime remain much debated.
