The Autobiography of Fukuzawa Yukichi. First edition in English of this memoir presenting the life of one of the central figures of Japan's Meiji intellectual and social transformation. Yukichi, the founder of Keio University and a leading advocate of Western learning, here recounts his early education, travels abroad, and role in shaping modern Japanese thought. The autobiography was first published in Japanese in serial form from 1898 to 1899 in the Jiji Shimpō, with the book version issued later in 1899.
