A Pre-Raphaelite Aeneid of Virgil in the Collection of Mrs. Edward Lawrence Doheny First edition, number 91 of 150 copies for private distribution, signed by the author, printer, and Estelle Doheny, with the latter's presentation slip tipped onto the front endpapers (as issued). The essay was written to accompany the exhibition at Mills College of the illuminated manuscript of the Aeneid produced by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, which was purchased by Doheny in 1932.Brinton (1887-1969), a classical scholar and member of Mills College's School of Fine Arts, wrote this short publication. It was finely printed by Ward Ritchie (1905-1996), at the time an important figure in the fine printing culture of Southern California, for Doheny, one of the greatest collectors of the 20th century.Provenance: Given to Stephen C. Massey by Monsignor Francis J. Weber as a gift of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
