The American artist James McNeill Whistler was a leading proponent of the 19th-century credo "Art for art's sake". Whistler describes his personality, his life and career, and writings; it was "the first volume consecrated exclusively to that master" (Murdoch, p. 503).Macfall was a lieutenant in the British Army before he began his career as an author. He published two novels, but found greater success as an art critic, particularly in his biographies of recent artists.
