The illustrations are taken from a 17th-century edition of the Shengji Tu, a key source concerning the life of the Sage.Alfred Koehn was a German diplomat and botany enthusiast who worked in Japan and then in China. In Beijing, he established a residence, "The Lotus Court", in a traditional hutong. Koehn wrote a number of books on Japan and China, continuing his publishing activities even amid the straitened circumstances of wartime Beijing.
