Charles Brock had worked with Dent previously alongside his brother Henry, illustrating Jane Austen's works in 1898. Following those volumes' success, Dent commissioned Charles to produce new illustrations in colour for their "Series of English Idylls".Goldsmith's classic work was originally published in 1766.
