A later edition, under a different title, of Sage's famed overland narrative through the Rockies, with visits to New Mexico and California. "Intelligent narrative of extensive travels from the Platte to the Arkansas, including the best contemporary account of Snively's abortive land-pirate expedition" - Howes."Sage was one of the earliest to travel the trail as an experience. His first jaunt was in 1841 with Lancaster P. Lupton's group to Ft. Platte, Wyoming (other ventures followed). The trip was obviously a commercial venture for Lupton. Sage's prime motivation appears to have been to obtain 'adventures' for this book. His second undertaking in 1842 took him as far northwest as Ft. Hall" - Mintz. Field observes that Sage's account "is crowded with incidents of Indian life, legends, and adventure," and Pilling notes that it contains "[a] few words and sentences in Sioux." The majority of the twenty-five illustrated plates consist of either portraits of Native Americans or scenes of Native life.
