Archive of behind-the-scenes production materials for David Lynch's Dune. An extensive visual record of the creation of David Lynch's Dune (1984) from the collection of production illustrator Ron Miller. It was the first film adaptation that made it to screen, after failed attempts in the 1970s by Arthur P. Jacobs, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Ridley Scott. The collection includes 85 photography slides, 60 photographs, 65 strips of film negatives, and 43 leaves of original preliminary artwork by Ron Miller and Tony Masters including first glimpses of the worms, spaceships, Atredies' hall, and the Emperor's palace. The preliminary artwork is comprised of 8 leaves by Tony Masters, of which 7 are signed, with the rest by Ron Miller. They show Masters and Miller working out the colour and texture of the worm ("black and pink, piebald (see elephant trunk), 'glow inside'"); designing the distinguishing features of Sardaukar grapples, "'thopters", knives, and ships; a pellet projector ("carried like a golf bag") and its pellets; pocket radios; Fremen handweapons and aeolian harps; imperial ships and tents; a chemical lamp; Dr Yueh's light machine and Jessica's umberella; and imposing bed made from worm teeth, and many more of the details that brought the film to life on screen.
