A collection of postcards showing leading women's suffrage activists, several signed. An album curated by Lilian Hicks, a prominent member of the Women's Freedom League (WFL) and the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). Thirty-three postcards are signed by their subjects, including the portraits of the Pankhursts and the Pethick-Lawrences, and images of suffrage demonstrations are captioned in Hicks's hand. Several were received from other suffragists and discuss the movement.The signed postcards include those showing Alison Neilans, Flora "General" Drummond, Lady Constance Lytton, Edith How-Martyn, and Hicks herself. A larger studio portrait shows Charlotte Despard, the leader of the WFL. Alongside the portraits, Hicks inserted postcards showing suffragette events, which she captions with dates and titles, such as four images of the bazaar orchestrated by the WSPU in December 1911. The cards received by Hicks as correspondence feature comic pro-suffrage cartoons and other more generic images. Several reference debates, meetings, and fundraising efforts; others are more social, such as two from the actress and proprietor of the International Suffrage Shop, Sime Seruya, showing her infant son.By the time she assembled this album, Lilian Hicks (1877-1953) was a well-established suffrage activist.
