A collection of photographic postcards showing leading suffrage activists. A group of postcards representing campaigners from the WSPU, the NUWSS, and the Women's Freedom League (WFL). The 21 individuals featured include Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst, and Emmeline Pethick Lawrence. The majority are unsent, but one was written in excitement during a rally: "C. Pankhurst is speaking as I write". The collection contains 37 unique postcards, 12 duplicates and one triplicate. Most of the postcards were issued by the suffrage organizations as merchandise for their movement. One was taken at a WSPU demonstration on 13 February 1908, and shows Emmeline Pankhurst being forcefully but peaceably arrested for attempting to deliver a message to the Prime Minister at the House of Commons. The postcard was sent six days later from one suffragette to another from a WSPU meeting in the Royal Albert Hall. Its author states "I write this in the Hall... C. Pankhurst is speaking as I write. Mrs P has been released today instead of tomorrow so will occupy the chair - I wish you were here - must listen".Another street photograph shows Christabel Pankhurst with the Pethick Lawrences on their way to Bow Street Magistrate's Court on 14 October 1908. Christabel and two others were on trial for incitement after they encouraged suffragettes to rush the House of Commons during a rally at Trafalgar Square.
