Hinkert's catalogues, thereby consolidating half a century of pomology into one work. A professor of botany at Jena, Langethal (1806-1878) specialized in agricultural science."A notable feature is the excellent series of cherries and nuts, the latter having nowhere been so well illustrated in colour" (Bunyard, p. 425). Each part - aside from the eighth, which is a double part - has 10 colour plates illustrating various varieties along with uncoloured illustrations of the halved fruit and their seeds. A cook by profession, Dittrich (1783-1842) pioneered a method for growing fruit trees that caused a boom in German fruit breeding. He published his Systematischen Handbuch der Obstkunde between 1835 and 1843.
