Two porcelain mugs from the Cultural Revolution. Emblematic of the Cultural Revolution's cult of Mao, these mugs are decorated with four volumes representing his hallowed Selected Works, the volumes radiating light. The text on the mug reads, "Mao Zedong Thought radiates golden light", and the lid proclaims, "Long live the great Mao Zedong Thought."For Mao, making revolution meant more than sipping tea: "A revolution is not a dinner party, or writing an essay, or painting a picture or doing embroidery; it cannot be so refined, so leisurely and gentle, so temperate, kind, courteous, restrained and magnanimous. A revolution is an insurrection, an act of violence."These examples were produced in Jingdezhen, a city famous for its ceramics. In previous centuries, Jingdezhen artisans made items for the imperial court.
