Articles and lectures on Chinese game-playing and secret societies. Four offprints, including presentation copies of "Chinese Games with Dice and Dominoes" and "Chinese Games with Dice", both inscribed "with the compliments of the author." Culin (1858-1929), a founding member of the American Folklore Society, centred his ethnographic research on Chinese-American communities and the cross-cultural study of game-playing.Three papers, all attractively illustrated, examine the methods and meaning of games enjoyed by Chinese labourers in the United States, as well as the clandestine environments in which they play, while the fourth describes the burgeoning secret brotherhoods observed by Culin in cities such as San Francisco, New York, and Philadelphia.The four works include:a) "Chinese Games with Dice and Dominoes."
