Memminger 1803-1888 , a native of Charleston, S.C., graduated from South Carolina College at 18 and entered a career in public service, eventually heading the finance committee in the state legislature; he was named Secretary of the Treasury for the Confederate States by Jefferson Davis and served in that role until he resigned in 1864.
