First American edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Paul, who has always kept the level high, with great regard, Seamus, 14 December 1996, after our Deerfield walkabout". The recipient was Paul Sullivan, Heaney's close friend and patron. This copy was acquired directly from Sullivan's estate.The Spirit Level was Heaney's first collection after receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature. Its American edition is unusual in that it was issued in part with both the book and a cassette tape of Heaney reading every poem, as here. It was first published in Britain earlier the same year.
