The Midnight Verdict. First paperback edition, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Paul & Ulla - Love, Seamus, 16/XI/2000". The recipients were Heaney's close friends Paul and Ulla Sullivan. Paul Sullivan was a patron of Heaney, having been introduced to the poet by Peter Fallon, the owner of the Gallery Press. This copy was acquired directly from Sullivan's estate.First published in a limited hardback edition in 1993, the book comprises three verse translations by Heaney: "Orpheus and Eurydice", from Book X of Ovid's Metamorphosis; "The Midnight Verdict", from Brian Merriman's Cuirt an Mhean Oiche; and "The Death of Orpheus", from Metamorphosis Book XI.
