First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "to Paul, 'poetry is strong enough to help', with great good wishes, Seamus, 7/XI/'95", also inscribed by Irish poet Peter Fallon underneath, "from Peter, too - in friendship". Heaney has signed the copy again on the title page.The recipient was Paul Sullivan, a patron of Heaney. The pair were brought together through the Irish poet Peter Fallon and remained friends for decades. This copy was acquired directly from Sullivan's estate.Heaney was Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1989 to 1994, with ten of the fifteen lectures he delivered collected here.
