The Coming of the Kings and Other Plays. An uncorrected proof copy with Hughes's manuscript corrections in ink, unbound, together with a bound uncorrected proof. Hughes's corrections amend spelling, change spacing, and add line breaks. In one instance, he crosses out the word "Jerusalem" to supply the alternative "Bethlehem".Published in 1970, the work brings together four children's plays initially written for radio: "The Coming of the Kings", "The Tiger's Bones", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Sean, the Fool, the Devil and the Cats". Hughes was enjoying great success as a children's author by 1970, having published the highly successful The Iron Man two years earlier. He was fond of the creativity that the form gave him, saying later in his career that "in writing for children, it seems to me there's an attractive possibility - of finding, in some way, [...] a lingua franca - a style of communication for which children are the specific audience, but which adults can overhear" (Letters, p. 482).
