Spelling it Out: In Honour of Brian Friel on His 80th Birthday. First edition, signed limited issue, one of 400 hardcover copies signed by the author, of which 100 were not for sale. It was simultaneously published in paperback.Loosely inserted is an autograph letter from the publisher, Peter Fallon, presenting this copy to Paul Sullivan. A patron of Heaney's writings, Sullivan hosted the poet for dinner twice a week while Heaney was lecturing at Harvard in the 1980s and '90s. This copy was acquired directly from Paul Sullivan's estate.This acrostic poem celebrates the dramatist Brian Friel (1929-2015), sometimes referred to as the "the Irish Chekhov" (Jones, p. 129).
