First American edition, inscribed by the author on the title page, "Seamus Heaney, Inscribed for Paul and Ulla, May Day, Deerfield, 1988", and signed by Heaney again on the front free endpaper.The recipients were Heaney's friends Paul Sullivan and his wife. When Heaney lectured at Harvard in the 1980s and '90s, Sullivan and Ulla hosted the poet for dinner twice a week; on his return to Ireland, Heaney invited them to stay with him. Inspired by Heaney's move to County Wicklow to escape the Troubles in Belfast, Field Work deals "with themes of personal and political history, place, and the 'everyday miracles' that would be alluded to in the citation when Heaney won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995" (Seamus Heaney HomePlace).
