Lessons in the Shanghai Dialect. First edition, recorded in just six institutional libraries. At the time of publication, the Shanghai vernacular was spoken by an estimated 20 million people, many of whom could speak no other dialect of Chinese. The author (1864-1947) was an American missionary and academic active in China from the 1890s to the 1930s. He was twice commended by the Chinese government for services to the nation.
